Keratin Hair Treatment: The After-Care

A keratin hair treatment is a popular solution for frizzy, difficult-to-manage hair. While a keratin hair treatment can make hair smoother and sleeker, it’s always best to know what to expect before committing. Continue reading to make an informed decision about keratin hair treatment!

What Is Keratin Hair Treatment and How Does It Work?

Keratin is a fibrous structural protein family that is the main structural component of hair, nails, and the outer layer of your skin. Keratin is a protein that gives hair strength and lustre, but it is weaker in curly and textured hair, resulting in dryness and frizz.

A keratin treatment is nothing but a chemical process in which salon professionals coat hair strands with the protein to make them smooth and shiny. While there are different types of keratin treatments, on a basic level, all of them involve diving into the hair follicle and injecting the porous areas with keratin to make hair healthier.

Interestingly, keratin is not able to tame frizz; that job is left for the formaldehyde in the formula to accomplish. The chemical works by locking chains of keratin into a straight line, leaving hair straight. Once the product is applied to the hair, carefully avoiding the scalp, the hair is blow-dried and flat-ironed.

A keratin hair treatment can last up to six months, and professionals can tailor formula blends to your specific hair type and demands. Depending on your hair length and thickness, hair texture, and the treatment formula utilised, the treatment might take anywhere from two to four hours.

What Should I Do With My Hair After A Keratin Treatment?

Follow these methods to extend the life of your keratin treatment:

Hair strands can lose some of their protein treatment due to water and dampness. This can cause hair to become porous and frizzy, as well as leave marks in the hair. You shouldn’t wash your hair for at least three days following the treatment, and you shouldn’t go swimming or engage in any strenuous physical activity since you don’t want to sweat.

Wear your hair down and straight for the first several days or as long as you can after the treatment. Because keratin is pliable at first, putting it up in a ponytail or bun, or braiding it, might cause dents.

Sleep on a silk pillowcase or pillow, as cotton or other materials might cause friction as you sleep, resulting in frizz and shortening the life of your keratin treatment.

Use hair care products without harsh detergents such as sodium lauryl sulphate or sodium Laureth sulphate. These detergents deplete natural oils and keratin in the hair, causing your treatment to wear out faster than planned.

After obtaining a keratin hair treatment, blow dryers and flat irons are the ideal equipment to employ to maintain your tresses smooth and straight. You won’t need to use hair styling products like hair sprays or gels, mousse, root-lifting sprays, or other root-lifting sprays because the weight of the keratin will hold your hair in place.

Reapply after three to five months, as the keratin will have degraded.

Hope this helps!
